CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Molten Depths

Careening down the obsidian-lined tube, we bounced from side to side, unable to slow our descent. The tube was much longer than I expected and wound around in an arc rather than straight down.

“Master!” Setha shouted.

I saw it, too. A pulsing red opening approached quickly. The closer we drew, the hotter the temperature climbed.

“Quickly!” I shouted as Setha drew her weapon and jammed the metal claw into the glassy surface. I flailed past her, grabbing her leg and braced my own legs against the narrowing walls just as we reached the end of the lava tube. We scrambled back up away from the edge and lay back to catch our breath.

The last level had been a grueling battle of endurance. After guzzling a full skin of water and a short rest to catch our breath, we slowly scooted down the last few feet to the edge and peered over.

Sixty feet below us, a vast lake of molten rock flowed freely in a flaming red cavern of primal fury. There seemed to be no way to cross.

“There,” said Setha as she pointed toward an outcropping of rock at least a mile away. Straining my eyes against the waves of heat that distorted the air around us, I saw the tiny black opening. It was likely the doorway down from the previous level. Had our allies made it safely through? The narrow rocky outcropping curved to the left but disappeared behind smoke.

Recalling the maps, I was now convinced it was where we should have exited if we hadn’t been shut off from the main tunnel.

“Any ideas on how to get over there?” Setha asked. “Have a levitation spell in any of those spellbooks?”

“In fact, I do. However, I do not have a sphinx’s feather that is needed as a component.”

“All of these enchanted items, and thousands in gold and gems, and you don’t have a way to acquire simple spell components?”

“No, I do not carry around a fully stocked laboratory brimming with the thousands of rare components needed to cast every spell combination. Sphinx feathers are incredibly rare in the first place, and there are limits to how many magical items these enchanted bags can hold,” I said defensively.

In fact, I had thought to pack several of the feathers, which I’d had laying on the table in the Sanctum Beyond but had simply forgot in the rush to begin our journey. I really needed to start having the Hearts make lists before setting out on these adventures. “We need a rope and anchor of some sort.”

Setha leaned over the edge of the precipice. “You’re going to lower yourself into that? I hope you know the strongest heat resistance spell in all the kingdoms.”

“Just find the rope. I’ll deal with the lava.”

Leaning as close as I dared to the edge, I began casting a test spell. “Rhymeous Lanceum!”

A thick projectile of ice erupted from the palm of my hand toward the lava flow below. Upon striking the surface, a flash of steam erupted.
